For-profit hospitals thrive in El Paso, Las Cruces

EL PASO (El Paso Times) – A national study shows that the for-profit hospital industry is thriving in El Paso and Southern New Mexico, even though more than 20 percent of the population live below the poverty level and one in three has no health insurance.
Two hospitals in El Paso and one in Las Cruces were among the 25 most profitable in the nation, according to rankings released by Forbes magazine.
Flowers Medical Center in Dothan, Ala., was the most profitable U.S. hospital. It had a net profit of 53 percent.
Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso was the second-most profitable hospital in America.
It had a 45 percent net profit for the year that started Oct. 1, 2008, according to the American Hospital Directory. The hospital received $243 million in patient revenue and had expenses of $132.7 million.
Memorial Medical Center was 20th on the Forbes’ list with a profit margin of 25.9 percent. Las Palmas, in Las Cruces, ranked 23rd with a profit of 25.1 percent.
